Seismic models of financial stress

Can the mathematics of stress and failure help us understand financial instability?

01 / MOTIVATING OBSERVATION

Financial instability invites a physical analogy: stress accumulates, interactions transmit disturbances, and failures can cascade. The research question is whether that analogy can produce measurable information.

02 / STARTING CONTEXT

Published research has investigated connections between financial crashes and critical phenomena. The lab's proposed inquiry is to specify its own measurable model and test where the analogy holds or breaks.

03 / WORKING HYPOTHESIS

A defined combination of stress accumulation, interaction, and small disturbances may identify changing financial conditions more usefully than an isolated signal. This remains a hypothesis to evaluate.

04 / PROPOSED INVESTIGATION

  1. Define observable counterparts for stress, transmission, and failure.
  2. Specify the data, time horizon, thresholds, and decision rules before evaluation.
  3. Compare with conventional volatility and risk baselines using walk-forward tests.
  4. Report false alarms, missed events, and sensitivity to market regimes.

05 / WHAT WOULD CHALLENGE THE IDEA?

If the model only describes known crashes after the fact, or fails to improve out-of-sample performance, its predictive value has not been demonstrated.
